If you love tequila and fruit juice based drinks, the Cantarito is something you have to try. There is not another drink that more perfectly blends, sweet, tart, and a refreshing carbonated fizz.
What is a Cantarito?
The Cantarito is a tequila based fruit cocktail that is extremely popular in Mexico, specifically in Jalisco. They are generally served in red clay pots, called cantaritos. The clay pots keep the drink cold and since they are cheap to make, they are generally given away with the cocktail.
What’s the difference between a Cantarito and a Paloma?
If you’ve ever had a Paloma before you know it is made with tequila and grapefruit soda. So, what is the difference between the two drinks?
The Cantarito builds upon the greatness that is the Paloma. While the Paloma only has two ingredients, the Cantarito adds in several more fruit juices. The additional fruits give this drink a new flavor. A Paloma is still a delicious drink and is in no way replaced by the Cantarito.
How to make this drink:
The Cantarito is a deliciously fruity drink. It has just the right amount of sweetness and tart citrus flavor to make it perfect. We like to make ours using fruit juices and soda water. However, If you do want to have something a bit more authentic to what you may find in Jalisco, Mexico you can skip the Simple syrup and soda water and just use the equivalent amount of grapefruit soda (Squirt soda if you want extra authenticity).
