What is a Bazooka Joe Shot?

A Bazooka Joe shot is equal parts creme de banana, Irish cream and blue curacao. It can be made as a layered shot or a shot that is shaken together. It tastes just like sweet bubble gum.

Creme de banana is a yellowish liqueur. It has a very sweet strong banana flavor. It is typically around 17 to 20% alcohol by volume. If you like the the flavor of this liqueur, you might also want to try the monkeys lunch cocktail.

Irish cream is a sweet and creamy liqueur which has a whiskey base. It also has hints of chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Blue Curacao is a bright blue colored liqueur. Despite its blue color, it actually has an orange or citrus flavor.

When to make this shot

With it’s a sweet bubble gum flavor and bright colors this shot is great fun celebrations. Here’s some occasions you might think about serving it at:

  • Birthday parties
  • Anniversaries
  • Poolside get togethers
  • Backyard barbecue
  • Springtime celebrations

How layering shots works

Layered shots are essentially shots where you place one liquid or ingredient on top of another. They maintain a distinct line or separation or each starts and stops.

The way that layering works is by different densities in the liquids. Heavier or more dense liquids will sit at the bottom while lighter or less dense liquids will sit on top of the heavier liquids.

You can layer any liquids as long as you put the heaviest on bottom and do you progressively lighter liquids each on top of one another.

One key to getting a perfectly layered shot is to pour each liquid in very slowly. If you pour too much or too fast then the liquids will tend to mix together some.

How to make this drink:

This layered shot isn’t too difficult to make, it takes only three ingredients. You’ll be able to put this one together in 5 minutes or less.

Instructions:

Step one

Get your creme de banana, Irish cream, Blue Curacao together. Also grab your bar spoon, jigger and shot glass.

Note: if you’re making this shaken instead of layered you will need a cocktail shaker and hawthorn strainer instead of a bar spoon.

Step two

We are going to make the layered version of the shot below. If you want to make a shaken version simply measure and dump all of your ingredients into a cocktail shaker that is full of ice. Shake It up and pour it into your shot glass.

Step three

Grab your jigger and use it to measure .5 oz of creme de banana. Pour your creme de banana into the bottom of your shot glass.

Step four

Grab your jigger and use it to measure .5 oz of Irish cream. Take your bar spoon and place it in your shot glass upside down just above the top of the creme de banana.

Then, slowly pour your Irish cream over the back of the bar spoon so that it sits just on top of the creme de banana.

Step Five

Grab your jigger again. This time use it to measure .5 oz of Blue Curacao. Once again take your bar spoon and place it in your shot glass. This time it should sit just above the Irish cream.

Then very, very slowly pour your blue Curacao over the back of your bar spoon so that it sits on top of your Irish cream.

With that your shot is ready to kick back and enjoy!
