What is a Rum and Gingerale?

A rum and ginger ale is a variation of a dark and stormy. The main difference is instead of using ginger beer for the dark and stormy you’re going to use ginger ale. The resulting cocktail has a similar flavor but with a lighter ginger taste and a little fizz.

Ginger ale is a soda and therefore is carbonated and fizzy. It has a sweet, but not too sweet flavor. It has hint of citrus mixed in with a strong but not overwhelming flavor of ginger.

There are a lot of other ginger ale cocktails also. Try out a Tequila and gingerale or vodka and ginger ale.

Variations

Rum comes in several different types and variations. And the variety that you use will affect the flavor of this cocktail. You can use any type of rum it really just depends on what your flavor preference is.

  • Dark rum – is a rum that has a strong molasses almost Smoky flavored taste it’s taste tends to be a bolder and stronger than white rum.
  • White rum – is a sweet and a light flavored rum with fruity undertones
  • Spiced rum – is a rum with spiced flavorings such as cinnamon vanilla, anise, pepper and nutmeg.
  • Coconut rum – though you can use coconut rum in this cocktail the coconut flavor and ginger flavor don’t mix as well as some of the other rums. But, it’s not a bad taste.

How to make this drink:

This cocktail is super easy to make. The ingredients are simple and there isn’t any elaborate garnish, layering or glass rimming to do. You should be able to stir this one up and 2 minutes or less.

Instructions:

Step one

Grab your jigger, highball glass, bar spoon, rum and Gingerale.

Step two

Fill your highball glass with ice. You should fill it almost to the top with ice.

Step three

Measure out 2 oz of rum using your jigger. Then, pour your rum from your jigger into your highball glass over your ice.

Step four

Measure out 4 oz of ginger ale using your jigger. Then, for your gingerale from your jigger into your highball glass with your rum and your ice.

Tip: if you don’t want to use your jigger to measure your Ginger ale, it’s okay to simply top your glass off of the ginger ale instead of putting an exact 4 oz.

Step Five

Now, you need to get everything mixed together well. Use your bar spoon, put it in your glass and stir things up. You want to stir it thoroughly, but not too hard or fast to make sure that the ginger ale doesn’t fizz up.

If you’d like to add an optional lime wedge as the garnish, you’ll need to slice the lime. Then take one slice and cut a small notch in the middle of the pulp and place it on the rim of your glass.

If you are using a cherry garnish, stick three on a cocktail pick and add it to your glass.
