    Jump to Recipe

If you’re looking for a colorful and gamified drink for your next get together try out these stop light shots. With red, yellow and green colored shots you’ll be ready to say ready, set and drink!

stop light shots: three shot glass with red, yellow and green colored shots on a wooden tabled

What is are Stop Light Shots?

Stop light shots are actually three separate shots. One is red and color, one is yellow in color and one is green in color just like the colors on a stoplight. The base liquor in each shot is vodka and the colors are made by the different mixers used. The mixers are cranberry juice, orange juice and Midori liqueur.

Vodka is a clear liquor. That makes it great for the base liquor in the shots since it won’t change the color of the mixers at all. Vodka tends to be a rather tasteless liquor which means that each of these shots will taste mostly like the mixer with a slight alcoholic bite as they go down.

When you’re choosing juice, the fresher the juice the better. Additionally, it’s best to get a pulp free orange juice so that your shot is a smooth texture.

Midori liqueur which is used to make the green colored stock light is a melon flavored liqueur. It originated in Japan. It is very sweet and it is flavored with honeydew and Yubari melons.

    Occasions to make this drink

This drink is a fun party drink since it’s sort of like a game in shot form. Here are a few times you might want to serve it up:

    • college parties
    • tailgating
    • bachelor and bachelorette party
    • sports celebrations

    Shot variations

If you would like some different flavors for these shots, here are a few ways to change them up but stay true to the colors:

    • Use a different liquor. The vodka is very well suited for these shots since it has a neutral flavor, if you prefer to use a different liquor like like silver tequila you certainly can. Just make sure that the liquor is clear.
    • Use flavored vodka. If you want to change up the flavors of your shots you can certainly use a flavored vodka. For example, cranberry vodka would go well with the cranberry juice and vodka Citron would go well with the orange juice. But really, feel free to do any flavor combination you prefer.
    • Replace the orange juice. If orange juice isn’t your favorite, you could use another yellow or orange flavored juice such as pineapple juice.
    • Replace the Midori. If Midori isn’t your favorite flavor, you could replace it with something like green Hawaiian Punch.
    • Replace the cranberry juice. If you don’t love the flavor of cranberry juice, you can replace it with another red drink such as grenadine or fruit punch.

Some other colorful shots are the traffic light shot and jolly rancher shots.
