Shake up this super awesome Kool-Aid shot if you’re looking for a sweet and fun drink to serve. This shot is reminiscent both in taste, smell and color to the super sweet Kool-Aid drink you might remember as a kid.
What is a Kool Aid Shot?
A Kool-Aid shot is a combination of vodka, Midori, amaretto and cranberry juice. The resulting shot is extremely sweet and fruity and tastes just like red Kool-Aid.
The vodka in the shot is really added just to have some additional alcohol content. You can’t really taste the vodka and it is well known for being a neutral flavored liquor.
Midori is a neon green liqueur. It originated in Japan and is made from honeydew and Yubari melons. It has a very sweet melon flavor. Unlike in this drink, midori often times creates a bright green drink, like this broken down golf cart shot.
Amaretto is an Italian liqueur. It is typically made either from almonds or the pits of a stone fruit such as apricots. It has a bitter and sweet flavor with hints of almond and cherry.
When you select a cranberry juice to use in this shot make sure to get no sugar added cranberry juice. Also, you want to get a pure cranberry juice and not a cranberry juice cocktail.
When to Make This Drink:
With its deep red color and super sweet flavor, this shot is very versatile and it’s in well at a wide range of different occasions including:
- winter holidays
- Valentine’s Day
- date night
- 4th of July
- Thanksgiving
- tailgating
Variations:
If you’re interested in mixing this one up a little, here are a few things to try:
- Make it a full cocktail. You can use the same ingredients but change the amounts to make a Kool-Aid cocktail.
- Tone down the alcohol. You can leave out the vodka and still get a very similar flavor and color to your shot. It will simply have a lower alcohol content.
- Make a grape Kool-Aid. Instead of mimicking red Kool-Aid, make a grape Kool-Aid flavored shot by substituting the Midori for blue curaçao and the vodka for raspberry liqueur.
