What is a Rum and Cream Soda?

A rum and cream soda is a cocktail made very simply of cream soda and rum. Rum and cream soda tastes like a sweet, creamy vanilla with a slightly spicy or coconutty flavor depending on what type of from you choose to use.

There are several different types of rums each have a little variation in their flavor. You can find dark rum, coconut rum, white rum and spiced rum. Though any of these four variations works just fine to mix in this cocktail, our two favorite flavor mixes are coconut rum and spiced rum.

If you choose to use coconut rum your resulting cocktail will be that creamy vanilla flavor from the cream soda combined with a hint of sweet coconut. If you choose to use spiced Rum your resulting cocktail will still have that creamy vanilla flavor, but will also have the pepper and spice on the back end from your rum.

A few other cream soda drinks to try are: Whiskey and cream soda or vodka and cream soda or fireball and cream soda.

    When should you serve it?

Honestly, with how easy this cocktail is to make it can be used for most any occasion. The two ingredients you need for it are relatively cheap and not difficult to find either.

If you’re looking for some specific occasions that this cocktail fits particularly well with try one of these out:

    • Poolside gathering
    • A day at the beach
    • A birthday party
    • Anniversary celebration

    How to make this drink:

This drink can easily be whipped up and 2 minutes are less. All you need are your two ingredients and to just give them a stir.

    Equipment:

    • highball glass
    • jigger
    • bar spoon

    Ingredients:

    • 2 oz Rum (coconut or spiced are our favorites for this one)
    • 4 oz Cream Soda
    • Ice
    • (optional garnish) cherries

    Instructions:

    Step one

Gather together your equipment and ingredients before you get started. This means you’ll want to grab your bar spoon, jigger, highball glass, rum and cream soda.

    Step two

Start by filling your highball glass with ice. You should put enough ice in the glass to fill it almost to the top.

If you want to add a garnish. Pop three cherries onto a cocktail pick and pop that into your glass.

    Step three

Next, you want to add your rum to your drink. Do this by measuring 2 oz of rum with your jigger. Then, pour your rum from your jigger into your glass over your ice.

    Step four

Next, you want to add your cream soda to your drink. Do this by measuring 4 oz of cream soda with your jigger. Then, pour your cream soda from your jigger into your glass over your ice.

Pro tip: you don’t need to be exact with the amount of cream soda for this one. In fact, you can simply top your glass off with cream soda instead of measuring it out if you want. Do note that the more cream soda you add the less you’ll taste the flavor of the rum.

    Step Five

The last thing you need to do is make sure everything is stirred well. Do this by using your bar spoon. Place it into your glass and give everything a couple of stirs. Make sure not to stir too hard or fast so that your cream soda does not fizz up.

Now, you can sit back, take a sip and enjoy!
