You don’t often hear of root beer being used as a drink mixer. Maybe it’s the bold and distinct flavor that makes people think it wouldn’t work well. But we are here today to tell you it is delicious especially when combining root beer and tequila aka a Señor Root Beer.
What is a Root Beer and Tequila?
A Root Beer and Tequila is not like other soft drink mixed drinks,, like a Whiskey and Coke or even a Whiskey and Root Beer. Those drinks are generally served in highball or rocks glasses and use about a shot of liquor and a small amount of soda mixer (3 to 4 ounces).
Our Root Beer and Tequila uses much more soda which makes the cocktail a bit smoother and tastier to drink.
Other Soft Drink Mixers
While root beer may not normally be the first mixer you think of, many other soft drinks and sodas are used quite often. Any bar, club, or restaurant you go to will probably have at least a handful of people at a time drinking some sort of cocktail with Coke, Sprite, or Ginger Ale.
Some of our favorites are a Rum and Coke (especially made with spiced rum) or, what we call a Budget Margarita, tequila and Sprite.
How to make this drink:
As we mentioned above, there are a few ways to make this drink. Some will make it similarly to a simple Coke mixer cocktail with a shot of tequila and then topped off with root beer (around 4 oz). Our version is a larger drink, but we think the 6:1 ratio of root beer to tequila plus the addition of lime makes this recipe far superior.
Equipment
Ingredients
12 oz bottle of Root Beer (we prefer A&W but you can use your favorite)
2 oz Tequila (gold works best, but silver is fine too)
1 oz Lime juice
1 Lime wedge garnish
Salted rim (optional)
Step One
Plan ahead and chill your pint glass in the freezer before making.
Step Two
After your glass has had time to get a good frost on it, take it out and fill it with ice. If you like, you can also salt the rim.
Step Three
Pour in 2 oz of tequila and 1 oz of lime juice.
Step Four
Slowly, top off the glass with root beer (the bottle should fit but may take some time due to it fizzing).
Step Five
Stir with a bar spoon.
Step Five
Add a lime wedge to the rim of your glass and enjoy!
