This simple and delicious Rum and Coke is sometimes knows as a Cuba Libre. With just two ingredients you can stir this up in just a few minutes. And, it’s super easy to customize so it fits your style and taste perfectly.
What is A Rum and Coke?
A rum a coke is very simply put a combination of 2 parts Coke and 1 part Rum. Typically, white rum if you are making a Cuba Libre, but you can use other rums detailed in the variations section below.
Aside from it’s simplicity, the pairing of white rum with Coca-Cola, is a match made in heaven. Nothing is better than when the sweet carbonated bite of Coke which blends seamlessly with the smooth flavor of rum.
In fact, mixed drinks with coke are really popular since it does make such a great mixer. A few similar drinks are Jameson and Coke, Vodka Coke, Batanga, or a Brandy and Coke.
Ingredients
- White Rum – we like to use a mid or top shelf since the flavor stands out.
- Coke – any type you like, we prefer Coke Zero.
- Ice
- Lime wedge (optional garnish)

Instructions
You can have this drink stirred up in four simple steps. Follow along below to make your own at home.
Step One
Top off a highball glass with some ice.
Step Two
Grab your favorite rum and add in 2 oz.
Step Three
Fill the rest of the glass with Coke. This should be around 4 ounces or so.
Step Four
Tumble them together or stir them with a bar spoon. Use a lime wedge as a garnish and enjoy!
Variations
This drink is super versatile. You can mix Coke with your favorite kind of rum and the drink will be even more spectacular. A few options are:
- Captain and Coke (Spiced Rum)
- Cubata with Dark Rum
- Malibu and Coke (coconut rum)
- Appleton and Coke (Jamaican rum)
Or, try out different kinds of Coke like Diet, Cherry Coke or Caffeine free.
Mixing Tips
- Maintain the ratio – the 2:1 ratio of Coke to Rum really results in the best flavor combination. Anything lower in Coke and the rum is a bit harsh.
- Make a pitcher – instead of making just one glass, serve this up at a get together and make a big batch. Simply double or triple the ingredient amounts. But don’t make it far in advance of the fizz in the Coke will go flat.
- Stir lightly – part of the zing in this drink is the fizz in the soda. So, to make sure you don’t get it too fizzy and then quickly flat, stir the drink gently with a bar spoon to mix it together.

Rum And Coke (Cuba Libre)
Equipment
- highball glass
- bar spoon
- jigger
- shaker optional
- Knife for optional garnish
Ingredients
- 2 oz Rum
- 4 oz Coke
- 1 Lime Wedge optional garnish
- Ice
Instructions
- Fill highball glass with ice.
- Using the jigger, measure 2 oz of rum.
- Pour rum from jigger into the glass.
- Using the jigger, measure 2 of of Coke.
- Pour Coke from jigger into the glass.Note: skip the measuring if you want and just top the glass off with Coke, it should be around 4 oz.
- Stir gently with bar spoon to mix. Or gently toss from glass to shaker and back to glass.
- To add optional garnish: Slice lime into wedges. Choose one and cut a small notch in the pulp. Place wedge on the rim of the glass.note: you can also add a squeeze of lime directly into the drink if desired.
