    What is a Grasshopper Drink?

The grasshopper drink is a combination of green creme de menthe, cream to cacao and heavy cream. The resulting drink is a bright green color and is full of minty chocolate flavor.

As the tale goes, this drink was invented in the early 1900s by a bar owner in New Orleans. But it’s sweet flavor it quickly became a favorite and was introduced as an IBA standard drink. This means that there are set ingredients for the cocktail.

Creme de menthe was invented in the late 1800s. It comes in both clear and green variations. The green variation is used for this drink. And it is where this drink gets its bright green color.

This liqueur is a very sweet, bright green minty flavored drink. The alcohol by volume can vary dependent on the brand but is usually around 20% alcohol by volume.

Creme de cacao is another type of liqueur. It also comes in two variations: dark and clear. So you could use either in this drink, but the best one to use is clear so that the bright green creme de menthe shines through.

This liqueur is typically a base Spirit like vodka that is flavored with chocolate. The resulting flavor is a very sweet chocolatey drink. The alcohol by volume for printing account also varies by brand that is typically around that 20% alcohol by volume as well.

Heavy cream is essentially the fat on top of milk. Is a thick, sweet and creamy drink. It amps up the creaminess of this cocktail.

    When to Make This Drink:

With this drinks bright green color and sweet flavor it is well suited for a wide variety of occasions including:

    • St Patrick’s Day
    • after dinner drink
    • date night
    • dessert drinks

    Variations:

Since the strength is an IBA standard, there isn’t much to do to change it up. However, one variation on this drink is to make it frozen.

A frozen grasshopper drink is a combination of creme de menthe, creme de cacao and two scoops of ice cream in place of the heavy cream. The resulting drink is still brilliant green. And it tastes like a mint chocolate chip milkshake.
