Cocktails often have funny or strange names and Sex in a Driveway definitely fits that criteria. This one is, obviously, a play on the classic Sex on a Beach. Despite it’s odd naming, it is a delicious cocktail that is absolutely worth adding to your bartending repertoire.
What the heck is Sex in a Driveway?
Well, you see, when two cocktails really love each other and…
Let’s stop that before it can get out of the driveway!
Okay, this drink is not actually anything like that. Sex in a Driveway is very similar to the more well known cocktail Sex on a Beach. The big difference between these two drinks is that Sex on a Beach has cranberry juice and Sex in a Driveway has Blue Curacao.
Other than those ingredients, these drinks are basically the same. But, as you may know, there is a big flavor difference between cranberry and blue curacao. Cranberry juice will give your drink a more tart, well, cranberry type flavoring. Blue Curacao has more of a bitter orange flavor more along the lines of Triple Sec. Plus, Blue Curacao is an alcoholic mixer while cranberry juice is not. Both drinks also belong on our favorite Cocktails with Sprite list.
Vodka or Rum?
You’ll find different recipes online saying to use vodka and others recommending rum. We like to think the choice is really up to you. Both liquors have their own unique qualities and affect the flavor profile of the drink they are in.
Rum is primarily made with sugar cane and sugar cane juice. This gives it a naturally sweeter flavor than vodka. Using a high quality rum will really bring out the some of the sugary sweet flavors. That’s why you see rum used in a lot of fruitier and frozen drinks like daiquiris.
Vodka is a milder liquor and does not have much of a strong flavor. That makes it blend well and almost disappear behind the other ingredients. If you want to taste more of the fruit juice you may want to use vodka.
For this recipe we would like to suggest that you use a flavored version of whichever you choose. Absolut Citron and Bacardi Limon are both fantastic drinks that will add more flavor to the drink and tone down the bit of the alcohol. Just be careful because they are really easy to drink quickly.
How to make this drink:
Before you start, decide if you’re using vodka or rum.
Step One
Stick a Hurricane glass in the freezer to chill and fill a mixing tumbler with ice.
Step Two
Add 2 oz of either Absolut Citron or Bacardi Limon (or any other vodka or rum you prefer) to the mixing tumbler.
Step Three
Add in 1 oz of Blue Curacao, 1 oz of Peach Schnapps, and top off with 4 oz of Sprite or Sprite Zero.
Step Four
Take out your highball glass and stick a strawberry, orange wedge, lemon wedge, and lime wedge on a 8″ cocktail pick. Place the garnish in the glass.
Step Five
Carefully pour your drink, ice and all, into the glass. You can also fill the glass with ice after adding the garnish and pour the drink through a Hawthorne strainer. Whichever method you prefer is fine.
