What is a French 75 Cocktail?

A French 75 cocktail is a combination of gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and champagne. It is an IBA standard drink which means that it has standard ingredients and ratios. It dates back to the early 1900s.

A French 75 cocktail tastes like a sparkly gin sour. It has the herbs and piney taste of the chin with a little bit of citrus tang smoothed out with bubbly sweetness.

Gin is a clear liquor made from juniper berries. It has a complex and robust flavor profile that has strong hints of pine like flavor as well as other spices and botanicals.

The combination of lemon juice and simple syrup is one that is used in many cocktails. It is a delightful combination of tart citrus sour with a little tinge of sweet.

Champagne is basically a sparkling wine. It can come in some various flavors and finishes. But, it tends to be slightly dry a little sweet and very bubbly.

    When to make this drink

This bubbly slightly tart and sweet cocktail is perfect for many different occasions such as:

    • formal celebrations
    • weddings
    • drinks with dinner
    • New Year’s Eve
    • date night

    Possible drink variations

Since this drink is a IBA standard, you won’t want to change the ingredients or amounts if you want to make a classic French 75. However, there are a couple twists on this drink that create similar cocktails.

    • French 76. This cocktail is built the same as a French 75 only you substitute vodka for gin.
    • French 77. This cocktail again is built the same as a French 75 only you substitute elderberry liqueur for gin.
    • French 125. Again built the same as a French 75 only substitute cognac for gin.

Some similar fizzy cocktails include: orange creamsicle mimosa, the thug passion drink, passion fruit mimosa and the blushing bride drink.

    How to make this drink:

With four simple ingredients this drink can be whipped up relatively fast. All you need to do is make sure ingredients together and top your glass off with champagne.

    Equipment:

    • Champagne Flute
    • jigger
    • cocktail shaker
    • Hawthorne strainer

    Ingredients:

    • 1 oz Gin
    • .5 oz Simple Syrup
    • .5 oz Lemon Juice
    • 2 oz Champagne
    • Ice
    • (optional garnish) lemon twist
empty champagne flute next to jigger, cocktail shaker, simple syrup, gin and champagne

    Instructions:

    Step one

Start out by gathering up your gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, champagne, cocktail shaker, Hawthorne strainer, jigger and champagne flute.

Go ahead and also make sure your champagne and champagne flute have been chilled.

    Step two

Go ahead and fill your cocktail shaker to the top with ice.

    Step three

Grab your jigger and measure ½ oz of lemon juice and toss it into the cocktail shaker.

Use your jigger again and measure ½ oz of simple syrup and toss that into the cocktail shaker.

    Step four

Take your gin and your jigger. Use your jigger to measure 1 oz of gin and throw that into your shaker.

    Step five

Mix everything together well by placing the top on your cocktail shaker. Then, shake the shaker for 15 to 20 seconds. The outside should get cold to the touch.

    Step six

Remove the top of the shaker and place the Hawthorne strainer over the shaker. Then, strain your liquid from the shaker into your champagne flute.

    Step seven

Then, you want to add your champagne. Do this by either measuring out 2 oz of champagne with your jigger. Or, topping your glass off with champagne.

    Step eight

If you want to add a lemon twist as the standard garnish, you’ll want to grab a lemon and cut a few wheels from it.

Then, take your knife and cut the peel away from the pulp keeping it all together.

Finally, cut the peel so that it is one long strip and then wrap it around a bar pick so that it twists.
