What is a Red Death Drink?

A red death drink is a combination of Southern comfort, sloe gin, vodka, amaretto, triple sec and orange juice. The resulting drink is extremely sweet and fruity it tastes almost like a sugared orange wedge.

Sloe gin and Southern comfort are both dark colored liqueurs that have a liquor base mixed with other ingredients. Southern comfort is a deep goldish color while sloe gin is a dark purplish red.

Sloe gin is a combination of gin and slow fruit which is sort of like a plum. Southern comfort, sometimes known as SoCo, is a whiskey based liqueur. It has fruits and spices added into it resulting in a sweet, smooth flavor with hints of caramel.

Amaretto is also a dark colored liqueur. It is typically made from either apricot pits or almonds. It has a slightly bitter almondy flavor.

Vodka is a clear liquor which is made from distilling fermented grains. It tends to have a neutral flavor that is almost tasteless.

Triple sec is a clear orange flavored liqueur. It is made by soaking orange peels in a base spirit.

When choosing orange juice for this drink make sure to get the freshest possible. It’s also important to use pulp free orange juice so your cocktail is not grainy in texture.

    Occasions for this drink

This drink is versatile with its sweet and pretty flavors and bright colors. Some occasions you might serve it at are:

    • Halloween party
    • summer celebrations
    • holiday get togethers
    • brunch

    Variations for this drink

If you’re looking for ways to change this drink up try some of these out:

    • Substitute triple sec. There are other orange liqueurs that you can use in place of triple sec such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier.
    • Add ingredients. Since this is not a standardized cocktail, some recipes call for some additional ingredients such as- galliano, pineapple juice or blackberry liqueur
    • Squeeze your own orange juice. The fresher the orange juice the sweeter and more refreshing your cocktail will be. The freshest orange juice you can get is when you squeeze it at home.

Some similar cocktails are: The Screw up drink and the Slow Comfortable Screw Drink and the alabama slammer.

Put your Hawthorne strainer over the top of the shaker and strain your drink from the shaker into the glass.
