An Amaretto Sunrise brings a warm and delicious tone to a familiar classic cocktail. It’s easy to make and rivals any other Sunrise cocktail for taste and beauty

What is an Amaretto Sunrise?

Just like a Malibu Sunrise, Vodka Sunrise, Tequila Sunrise, or Strawberry Sunrise, the Amaretto Sunrise is a cocktail that takes a liquor/liqueur, mixes it with orange juice, and then floats a small amount of grenadine on top. Since the grenadine is heavier than the alcohol and OJ, it will slowly sink to the bottom of the glass. This creates a gorgeous color gradient that simulates a beautiful sunrise (hence the name)

If you want a non-alcoholic version, try this sunrise mocktail.

A few similar Amaretto based drinks are Amaretto and Orange Juice and and Uppercut shot.

Let’s learn how to make one!

How to make this drink:

Floating the grenadine on the top of this drink is one of the most satisfying cocktail oriented experiences you can have. It is like a work of art you can drink.

Equipment

  • 8″ cocktail pick
  • bar spoon
  • highball glass
  • cocktail shaker
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • jigger

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Amaretto
  • 3 oz Orange juice
  • ½ oz Vodka
  • 1 oz grenadine (whatever your preference)
  • 2 Maraschino cherries
  • 1 orange wedge

Step One

Stick a highball glass in the freezer to chill it and fill your cocktail shaker ¾ full with ice

Step Two

Pour your Amaretto, Orange juice, and Vodka into the shaker.

Step Three

Put the lid on the shaker and shake for about 10 seconds or so.

Step Four

Take an 8″ cocktail pick and skewer a maraschino cherry, orange wedge, and a second maraschino cherry and slide them to the top of the pick.

Step Five

Take out your highball glass, place your garnish inside the glass, and fill in the empty space with fresh ice (you may have to move the cocktail pick around some to get all the ice in)

Step Six

Using a Hawthorne strainer, strain the drink from the cocktail shaker into your glass.

*Alternatively, you can not use fresh ice or a strainer and carefully pour the drink with the ice from the shaker into the glass

Step Seven

Finally, float 1 oz of grenadine on top by slowly pouring it over the back of a bar spoon just over the surface of the drink (float means to add the ingredient on top without mixing it in)

Step Eight

Sit back and enjoy the view!
