What is a Hairy Buffalo Cocktail?

A hairy buffalo cocktail is typically made as a large punch bowl for parties and big get togethers. It is a combination of fruit punch, gin, tequila, rum, whiskey and cut fruit. It is similar to jungle juice, hunch punch and other similar punch drinks that are chock full of fruit and alcohol.

This cocktail is a festive bright red color filled with colorful fruit slices floating in it. It is a really sweet, light and fruity drink. The tequila does stand out a little in the flavors. However, it’s extremely smooth and tends to taste like whatever fruit you add to it.

This cocktail or punch is jam-packed full of high proof liquor, so it is important to be careful while drinking it especially since the fruit juice is mask the alcohol so well.

Occasions for this drink

Since this cocktail is typically used as a punch for large gatherings here are some occasions you may want to try it at:

  • college parties
  • large get togethers
  • super bowl parties
  • barbecues

Variations on this drink

This drink is not considered a IBA standard which means that ingredients sometimes are switched up. Here are a few variations you can try out:

  • different fruit. The ultimate flavor of this drink is really dependent on the fruit used. We used strawberry and kiwi for this batch however many other fruits also work well such as pineapple, watermelon and oranges.
  • Use different fruit juice. While fruit punch is a pretty standard go to for this drink, you could use different fruit juices instead such as apple juice, pineapple juice or orange juice. It is best to use more than one fruit juice if not going with fruit punch.
  • switch liquor. Gin, tequila, vodka, whiskey and 151 rum or the typical go-tos for this cocktail. However, if you don’t have one of these you could simply double the amount of one of the others. Additionally, if you wanted to add a little extra flavor you could use a flavored vodka or different types of whiskey to vary the drink a little.

If you like punches, also try out: vodka punch, tequila punch and rum punch.
