    Jump to Recipe

The LA water cocktail is a brightly colored green cocktail which is high on alcohol content but also high on flavor. Be careful with this one as you won’t hardly know you’re drinking the amount of liquor that you are.

What is a La Water Cocktail?

In LA water cocktail is a bright green highball drink that is made up of equal parts vodka, gin, tequila, white rum, triple sec, Midori, Chambord, Blue curaçao and sweet and sour mix. The resulting cocktail is a surprisingly sweet and delicious flavor sort of reminiscent of gummy worms or lick them sticks powder with a little citrus zing on the back end.

Vodka, tequila and white rum are all clear liquors. While each is made from a different base ingredient that is fermented and distilled they do have similar characteristics. Vodka is typically made from a grain like rye. Tequila is made from the Blue agave plant. And white rum is made from sugarcane products.

Gin is also a clear liquor. However, it has a more distinctive taste than vodka, tequila or white rum. This is due in part to the juniper berries and other herbs and spices used to make it. It has an herbal and pine-like flavor.

Triple sec is also clear. However, it is a liqueur. It has a strong orange flavor to it.

Blue curaçao is a blue liqueur. And has a similar orange flavor to that of the triple sec. Blue curacao is an essential ingredient in this drink to give it its bright color.

Midori is a melon flavored liqueur. It is neon green in color and is another big part of the color of this LA water cocktail.

Chambord is a deep purple color. It is a blackberry liqueur and taste sweet and syrupy with a blackberry flavor.

Sweet and sour mix is exactly what it sounds like. It is a mixer that has a sweet and citrusy tart sour flavor.

    When to serve this drink

With its sweet sort of fruity flavor and fun color, this cocktail is perfect for lots of different occasions such as:

    • informal get togethers
    • college parties
    • St Patrick’s Day
    • big celebrations

    Possible variations

There are a few ways to change this drink up. Here are a few ideas:

    • Use Cointreau. Instead of using triple sec use another clear orange liqueur like Cointreau.
    • Make your own sweet and sour mix. Instead of using store-bought sour mix make your own by mixing 1 oz of lemon juice with .75 oz of simple syrup.
    • Make it a Long Island iced tea. By removing the Blue curaçao, Midori and chambord and adding in some Coke you can make a Long Island iced tea instead.
    • Make a blue motherfucker drink. Substitute out the Midori in Chambord to make a similar tasting blue motherfucker drink.
    • Other similar variations which is a few ingredient swap outs include: Tokyo tea and Texas tea.

Other cocktails with lots of ingredients include: Long Island Iced Tea, and Call me a Cab Drink
