What is a layered shot?
A layered shot is a shot where you sit one ingredient or liquid on top of another in your glass. The reason you’re able to do this is due to the densities of the different liquids.
You’ll always start with the heaviest or most dense liquid at the bottom and work your way up with the top being the lightest or least dense liquid.
In order to get clear cut definition between each ingredient it is important to add the liquids to your shot glass very slowly so they don’t mix together. One common way to do this is by slowly pouring them over the back of a bar spoon which breaks the velocity in which the liquid enters the shot glass.
How to make this drink:
This shot does take a little bit of time to make due to the layering and garnishes. It’s not difficult to do, however, you’re going to want to give yourself five or so minutes to get it ready.
Equipment:
- Bar spoon
- jigger
- Shot glasses
Ingredients:
- ⅔ oz Grenadine
- ⅔ oz Rumchata
- ⅔ oz Tequila Rose
- Whipped Cream
- Pink Sugar
- Ice
Instructions:
Step one
Grab your tequila rose, RumChata, grenadine, bar spoon, jigger, shot glass, whipped cream, saucer and pink sugar.
Pro tip: you can often times find pink sugar or they made at the store. However, if you don’t have any there you can make your own Pink sugar with sugar and a couple drops of pink food coloring.
The pink color certainly doesn’t affect the flavor so if you can’t find Pink sugar and don’t want to make any you can just use regular white sugar.
Step two
Let’s start by rimming our glass. To do this, you want to wet the rim of your glass with an ice cube.
Sprinkle your sugar onto a saucer and a thin layer. If you want to use Pink sugar but couldn’t find any pre-made in the store use a drop or to a food coloring and mix that in with the sugar as well.
Place your glass rim down into the sugar and rock it back and forth slowly until the rim is coated with sugar.
Step three
Use your jigger and measure out ⅔ of ounce of grenadine. Pour your grenadine into the bottom of your shot glass.
Step four
Use your jigger and measure out ⅔ of an ounce of RumChata. Take your bar spoon and place it upside down just above the grenadine in your shot glass.
Very slowly pour your RumChata over the bar spoon into the shot glass. It should sit on top of the grenadine.
Step Five
Use your jigger to measure ⅔ of an ounce of tequila rose. Take your bar spoon and place it upside down just above the RumChata and your shot glass.
Very slowly poor the Tequila Rose over the bar spoon into the shot glass. It should sit on top of the rumchata.
Step six
Finally, take your whipped cream and add a very large dollop to the top of the tequila rose. You’ll want to make sure that you don’t spray it on too hard or fast or it will mess up your layering.
Now your shot is ready to take. You can kick it back and enjoy!
